Biography

Pei Shimin (裴石民, 1892-1976) was a renowned Yixing pottery master from the modern era who made significant contributions to the art form during a transformative period in Chinese history. Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, he began his apprenticeship in pottery making at a young age and developed exceptional skills in both traditional and innovative teapot designs.

Pei Shimin was particularly known for his mastery of geometric and angular forms, as well as his ability to create teapots with precise proportions and clean lines. He worked during the Republican period and into the People's Republic of China era, adapting his craft through major political and social changes. His work bridged traditional Yixing techniques with modern aesthetic sensibilities, and he trained numerous students who would become important artisans in their own right.
