Biography

Wu Yungen (吴云根, 1892-1969) was a renowned Yixing pottery master of the Republican and early People's Republic periods. Born in Yixing, Jiangsu Province, he began his apprenticeship at age 14 under master potter Wang Shengquan. Wu became known for his exceptional skill in creating traditional teapot forms with precise craftsmanship and elegant proportions.

Throughout his career, Wu Yungen developed a distinctive style characterized by clean lines, balanced proportions, and masterful control of clay. He was particularly celebrated for his ability to create teapots with thin walls and precise fitting lids. After 1949, he became one of the first generation of master artisans recognized by the new government and played an important role in training younger potters and preserving traditional Yixing techniques during the mid-20th century.
