As a perfectionist, Gu Jingzhou spent his entire life deliberating and researching the expressive power of Yixing pottery—namely, the "form, spirit, energy, and bearing" of Yixing ware. In terms of how to achieve this expressive power through concrete artistic practice, Gu Jingzhou approached it by starting with every detail of the Yixing pottery production process, strictly controlling standards and rationally applying techniques. Among these, the properties and selection of clay materials, as well as the crafting and use of tools, constitute two fundamental elements.
