# Paddle (Pāizi)
A wooden implement used for beating the body cylinder, patting clay slabs, and pushing walls and scraping bottoms. Also called "listening to the clay's strength" — one thin and one thick. Depending on the characteristics of the clay material, paddles come in various sizes, with hard woods that resist deformation being the primary material. The paddle is a fundamental tool in Yixing pottery craft. Typically, at least three paddles are needed for beating the body cylinder: large, medium, and small.
# Loach Knife (Niqiándāo)
A thin-handled knife tool used for cutting Yixing clay coils and trimming clay bodies, named for its blade head resembling a "loach fish." Materials include steel, wood, and others. The best loach knives have moderately curved blade surfaces and pointed heads with rounded tips.
