Yixing teapots, relying on the superior properties of their clay material, possess distinctive forming techniques that set them apart within the entire ceramic industry's molding methods. The ancients said: "Without compass and square, one cannot make circles and squares." This saying is a profound truth, and it holds equally true in the history of Yixing pottery craft. Through hundreds of years of technical practice and refinement by generations of artisans, a series of unique and rational production techniques has been developed. Those learning the craft must undergo rigorous basic technical training—there are no shortcuts to becoming a master. The Yixing craft both preserves excellent technical traditions and gradually evolves through refinement, giving rise to various stylistic schools and techniques from different periods. Overall, these can be categorized into three major types: geometric forms, decorative pattern forms, and realistic sculptural modeling. No two squares are alike, no two rounds are the same; tall or short, flat or straight—each employs different production methods ranging from simple to elaborate, each excelling in its own way. These works concretely emanate the artistic appeal of life's atmosphere and the spirit of their times, continuously producing numerous highly skilled modern teapot masters, enabling the Yixing pottery craft to stand tall in the forest of ceramic arts, dazzling and brilliant, its fragrance enduring through the ages. --- *(Published in* Yijin*, 1985)*
